Our thoughts on international no diet day

Our diet also impacts on our health. Whilst we are having to stay at home, it is much easier to sit around for longer, or watch the TV, watch films, and become more sedentary than when we are going to work, and getting out and about as normal.

 

However, May 6th is International No Diet Day.  Mary Evans, who having suffered anorexia herself, created the day in 1992, aiming to help tackle tough issues regarding diet and body awareness.  It focuses on a number of things:

 

  • Educating people about the right way to diet responsibly and effectively
  • Having all people take a one-day break from their diets
  • Celebrating the diversity of different shapes and sizes.

 

It is all about getting a healthy balance. This is so important during lockdown where someone might eat less because they are unhappy, or too much for similar reasons. Or just unhealthily because it’s a treat to eat loads of junk or sugar-loaded foods.

 

What happens when there is no choice around your diet?

 

Some people have specific diets, due to food allergies and other medical issues. This means that they may already have a limited number of foods they can and can’t eat, so to diet, or even have a day with no diet, is not an option for them.

 

During lockdown it has been harder to obtain certain food products, due to the food shortages in the shops and supermarkets.  This is where online specialist shops have been able to support people with their specialist diets.
